2022 Hurricane Season
The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The areas covered include the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
Predictions
April 7, 2022 - The Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project team forecasts 19 named storms. Of the named storms 9 are predicted to be hurricanes with 4 being major hurricanes.
May 24, 2022 - The Climate Prediction Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts 14 to 21 names storms. Of the named storms 10 could develop into hurricanes, including 3 to 6 major hurricanes.
Increased Activity
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) attributes the above average activity to several factors including the ongoing La Nina, warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, weaker tropical Atlantic trade winds and an enhanced west African monsoon.
